1 Easy Way to Strengthen Your Writing

Don’t water down your message with buzzwords or jargon. Readers grow immune to those once-punchy words.

Words that started their lives as adjectives and then turned into verbs (or vice versa) seem to be particularly at risk of becoming overused corporate lingo.

Instead, type that abstract buzzword into your favorite thesaurus. Choose a word that communicates what you mean. Be concrete. Be specific.

I’ve seen and heard the word “actionable” so often lately that it makes me twitchy.

Merriam-Webster suggests using these words instead:

Synonyms of #actionable:
applicable, applicative, applied, functional, practicable, practical, serviceable, ultrapractical, usable (also useable), useful, workable, working

Which words are you tired of seeing and hearing? Better yet, can you replace them with a better word?
